EASLEY -- Marty Ward pulled off the Late Model Stock double dip Saturday night at Greenville Pickens Speedway.

After starting second and winning the opening race, Ward had to start seventh in the 50-lap nightcap, but he showed his Ford had plenty of power when he steadily moved up to take the checkered flag again.

Randy Porter, who had failed to start the first race, had much fresher tires, and he came all the way through the pack finish to second.

"I have to thank Randy," Ward said. "He raced me hard and fair, and my car had got loose so I had to protect the bottom. I came here tonight hoping I could win one of the races, but I am at a loss for words after winning two. If it weren't for my crew, I couldn't have done it.

"They kept telling me to have patience, but that's hard to do when you are in seventh. I probably used up the car trying to get to the front, but everything turned out just fine."

With Porter running a strong second, David Roberts was third. Coleman Pressley, who let the first part of the race, was fourth and Kenneth Headen took fifth.

Ward was driving a car he's had only three weeks.

"Really, we picked up this car three weeks ago, and had to finish it." Ward said between races. "We had a whole lot of work to do on it to even get here, and I've never had a car that handles like this through the corners," Ward said. "This car was great and it is all due to the fellows who have worked so hard to get it ready."

Ward knows something about good-handling race cars, too. The Marietta native has won the track championship four times. He is always very quick to say he is not running for points, but to win, and let the points fall where they may.Roberts, the defending track champion , sat on the pole and led much of the first race. finished second, with Ralph Carnes taking third, Pressley fourth and Headen was fifth.

Robin Darnell took command early in the Sportsman main event, then lost the edge he had built up with a caution flag flew. Then he had to contend with Chris Chastain, who stayed close but could not pass. Chastain had his hands full, meanwhile, with Jamie Altop, who finished third.

Red Ables led from start to finish and won the first Charger main event, with Les Mahaffey taking second. Ricky Stephens took third, with James Johnson fourth. Andy Norris grabbed fifth.

Chuckie Greer grabbed the victory in the second Charger main event, with Anthony Mann in second. Donnie Lockaby took third, with Mike Mote and Bryan Davis in fourth and fifth

In the first Renegade race, Charlie Trammell used an outside front row starting position to grab the lead and outrun polesetter David Cepek for the victory. Tyrone Anglin was third, with Justin Cone fourth and John Cordell fifth.

Matt Hale tried and tried and finally managed to take the lead over Dale Walker on the last lap for the victory in the second Renegade race. Jamie McAlister was third, with Scott Cordell fifth.
