Roberts wins race, takes points lead
PRESS RELEASE FOR GPS
SundaY, May 4th 2008

David 'Rocket' Roberts won his first Late Model Stock race of the season Saturday night at Greenville-Pickens Speedway and took over the top spot in the points race.

Roberts took the lead on the fifth lap and stayed right there as pileups and spinouts kept going on behind him.

"It's been a long time since I drove a car like this," Roberts said in Victory Lane. "This is a great racer. We got off to sort of a slow start this year, and today's weather just about drove us crazy. It would clear up and the sun come out, then it would cloud back up. We kept changing the car, and we finally put on the shock package that got us to the win."

Roberts, the defending track champion, took the lead by two points as Marty Ward, who had been in the lead, finished third and is now two-points behind.

When the LMS main started, Ward, in fourth place coming under the green flag, suddenly spun out between the first and second turns. It turned out Ward had some assistance, as another car hit Ward in the rear.

Ward restarted 18th after the spin and quickly worked his way back toward the front. One lap later Ward was 11th, then 10th, and on up to eighth on lap 10; From there Ward kept charging, and was fifth on the 12th lap.

Meanwhile, Roberts had taken control on the fourth lap and was comfortably ahead of first Ralph Carnes, then Coleman Pressley through the first half of the race.

Another caution on lap 28 restarted the field with Roberts in front, Pressley and Carnes in second and third, respectively. Pressley had passes Carnes on the 1th lap.

Ward was riding fourth.

Kenneth Headen said before the race he figured he has a fifth-place car, since he has finished there every race this season, was sitting right there, in fifth.

With caution coming out again on lap 28, Ward was able to move up on Carnes, and four laps after the race restarted Ward moved into third place.

That left Roberts still in control, moving out to a safe lead on every restart, and Pressley was being pressed by Ward before the caution again flew on lap 35.

Despite the restarts, the field remained stable, with Roberts, Pressley, Ward, Carnes and Headen completing the top five.

The results of the LMS race are unofficial, pending postrace inspection.

In the Sportsman main event, Tim Lollis led most of the race, but managed to cross the finish line one-half car length ahead of Randy Ballew, who made a tremendous charge on the last lap.

Jamie Altop was third, with Greg Darnell fourth and Chris Chastain fifth.

In the first Charger main, Ricky Stephens made winning look easy, with James Johnson in second and Chuckie Greer in third. Michael Mote and Donnie Lockaby was fourth and fifth.

It took Les Mahaffey seven laps to catch leader Andy Norris, and from that point on the fireworks were for second place. Norris and Tyler Stephens were battling for second place, and a lapped car was there, and it was a case of three cars in just enough room for two cars.

Stephens held on for second, with Norris suffering tire problems and Red Ables taking third. Scott Mann was fourth, Mike Hughes fifth, and Chad Haney sixth before Norris made it across the start-finish line.

Tyrone Anglin used a slick move going into the first turn of the first lap of the first Renegade main event to take the lead, and he was in convincing control for the entire race. Anglin recorded his second victory of the year, with Matt Hale taking second, Dale Stancil in third, Tony Leslie took fourth and Percy Proctor was fifth.

In the second Renegade race, Malibu Monica Blount had fans on their feet as she challenged for the lead. Jeremy Drummond led the first two laps, with Blount second, and Ray McAdams went from third to first on the third lap, passing both Blount and Drummond.

McAdams stayed right there for the remainder of the race, and Blount got by Drummond for second. Dale Walker was fourth, with Dale Walker fifth.
