Marty Ward went into Saturday night's Late Model Stock race at Greenville-Pickens Speedway with a commanding points lead and a seven-race winning streak. He had won nine on the season.     Make that eight and ten. Without serious problems.

Defending track champion David Roberts, who went into the race as the second place driver in the point standings, had trouble just 12 laps into the race when he stripped the gears out of his rear end and was unable to continue.

Anthony Anders, who is also having a terrific year although not running for the points title, gave Ward some competition early in the race but had to settle for second in the latter stages.     With Ward in front, and Anders in second, Randy Hawkins was third, and Kenneth Headen was fourth.     "With it being double points night, I hate it that David Roberts had trouble.

He worked on his car all day and he might have had something for me, but it's just a shame that he had trouble. I had much rather race people on the track, instead of being out there when they have problems."      It was just seven laps into the race when, on a restart, Roberts didn't pick up speed. Instead, he coasted around the track and into the pits after stripping the gears in the rearend.

"I know I took a leap in the points, and I can just about count the races down for you," Marty said. "I would love to win a championship for Tommy and Ryan Norris, and I would like to dedicate it to my father."      Johnny Hightower was the fifth-place finisher, as Ralph Carnes was sixth. Anthony Cordell took seventh, with Anthony Cordell, Grand Von Schalkwy, Amanda Lynch and Grant McGinnis rounding out the top ten.

Jamie Altop kicked his hard-luck ways this season and broke into the Sportsman Victory Lane in a commanding fashion. Altop chased Chris Chastain for the first half of the race, getting by one time only to have to drop back due to a caution flag, but he would not be denied. Altop stayed at it and got by Chastain, who eventually lost second place to Tim Lollis. Stanley Pressley was fourth, and blew his engine just as he went beneath the flagstand. Rob Horton finished fifth.

Tyler Stephens had little trouble in the first Charger main event, with Les Mahaffey coming up from his rear-starting spot to finish second. Mike Hughes was third, with Tim Crowe fourth and Michael Mote fifth.     Scott Mann grabbed the victory in the second Charger main event to stay in the thick of the points race for the division. Ricky Stephens narrowly missed making it a family sweep in Chargers, finishing second, as James Johnson was third. Zach Pressley took fourth and Johnny Rainey was fifth.

In the first Renegade race, Dale Stancil went from worst to first for the victory, but it also took a slight overdrive by Monica Blount for the move to be successful. Blount had led much of the race, with Stancil providing pressure, and in the fourth turn of the white flag lap Blount slid up the track just a bit, which allowed Stancil, who was waiting to pounce, room to get by.

Freddy Hale, Jr., was third, followed by Scott Smith and Dale Walker.     Ray McAdams also started at the rear of the field in the second Renegade race, and Charlie Trammell, who started beside McAdams, took second. Percy Proctor was third, with David Cepek and Matt Hale rounding out the top five
