RACE NOTES:
03/01/2009

Mother Nature 1, GPS 0

There was no question about it on Saturday, Feburary 28, as rain washed out the first scheduled practice day of 2009. Chances are looking better for the Saturday, March 7 scheduled practice.

Smarty Marty

Marty Ward, our defending GP champion, tested the turns on Orange Saturday, Feburary 21. Early word is that Marty is, as expected, fast.

Party On Garth

The second annual STARTING LINE PARTY is scheduled for Thursday, March 12th at Bailey's Sports Grille on Laurens Road in Greenville. Show cars will be on hand as the fun will get underway about 5pm, hosted by WCCP, 104.9 The Drive. Drivers to appear with their race car include: Amanda Lynch, Anthony Anders, Kenneth Headen, Randy Ballew, Tim Crowe, Zach Pressley, JD Griffith, Scotty Smith, Jeremy Drummond. All GPS drivers and team members are encouraged to attend.

Rack 'em up

The highlight of the STARTING LINE PARTY at Bailey's will be single elimination pool tournament open to GPS drivers. Last year's winner Matt Hale will return to defend that title, as the pool tournament winner gets the first GPS trophy of the season, courtesy of trophy sponsor SIGNS & STUFF.

Octo Mom had 8, we have only 2

Late Model Twin 50s will open the season on Saturday, March 14, with a regular race card in all other divisions scheduled.

From the littlest acorn.....grew a STUMP

Dillon Crowe (AKA: Stump), will make his racing debut in the 2009 GPS Renegade division. Dillon is the son of GPS driver Tim 'Boss Hog' Crowe.

And then there were 3

Plans are for a new chair to join Keith and T Bob on the Dick James Law Firm UPSTATE RACE DAY SHOW, which will broadcast the first 2009 installment from GPS on Saturday, March 14. Announcement of the new voice will be made at the Starting Line Party on March 12.

Happy, Happy Birthday

In addition to coming in like a lion today with a prediction of snow in Upstate South Carolina, Late Model driver Amanda Lynch is celebrating her 20th birthday on this March 1. Amanda...you're not a teenager any more, but Happy Birthday, anyway from GPS!

A Pressing Issue

The GPS maintenance department made the Jerry Howard Memorial Press Box their focus in the off season, and work is almost complete on a newly renovated Press Box, complete with new glass all around, carpeting, and first class appointments. The Press Box is now divided into two area, one for scoring and officiating and one for Media and VIPs.

Sponsorship is the key

Last year, GPS was recognized by SPEEDWAY ILLUSTRATED for it's efforts to bring speedway promotion and advertising to area businesses at greatly reduced rates for those businesses sponsoring GPS drivers. The program was highly successful and accounted for several major sponsors coming onboard with GPS drivers and race teams. The program will roll again in 2009, and any drivers interested can call the GP marketing department for details.

The Outlaw

Terry (The Outlaw) Hawthorne will be returning to the renegade division with the same car. The car has many upgrades done and should be very competitve, should run much faster and handle much better. Terry is still looking for sponsors to help with tires and other things to be able to run all year.

Twitter with us in 2009

Texting is all the rage...and GPS winners can be sent to your mobile device at the conclusion of the race programs in 2009. Other details will be sent as well to GPS Twitter followers, such as information on postponed events or special breaking new messages. More details to come soon on how you can follow GPS with Twitter in 2009.

VIP Treatment

Aaron's Sales & Leasing on White Horse Road is once again supplying all the furniture in the three TURN ONE Luxury Box Suites. For information on reserving a suite or suites for your family or group in 2009, call the GP front office at (864) 269-0852.

Talk to Me

SPEED SCAN will once again offer the popular 'In Car Audio' segement in 2009, where GP drivers are interviewed over the GPS Public Address System as they are down on the track. Plans are to expand this feature in 2009 with more Late Model drivers and even Sportsman drivers as well.

All Dressed Up

Flags and welcoming banners will welcome fans to the speedway in 2009, dressing up the main entrance flag poles for the start of season #64 at the historic half mile.
