The excitement was almost in the anticipation Friday night at
Greenville-Pickens Speedway, but Anthony Anders provided plenty of excitement on
the final lap of the annual 50-lap Shrine Race.
Anders, who had passed Marty Ward for second place with 15-laps
remaining, ducked below Toby Porter and pulled out front to take the checkered
flag on the final lap.
For the first 22 laps, fans were treated to a tight battle between
Toby Porter and David Roberts, then Roberts' engine exploded going into the
third turn.
Then, when the race was restarted, Fans watched as Porter, point
leader Marty Ward, Anders, and Jeremy Burns battled for the top spots. Anders
passed Ward with 15-laps remaining, setting up the final lap pass for the win.
With Anders in front, Toby Porter and Ward in the next two spots, that
puts Ward 78 points ahead for his sixth track championship.
"There, on the last lap, Toby seemed to get in there a little hot, and
I managed to get by," Anders said. The local veteran went on to thank his
crew and friends, wanting them to share in the victory.
Burns took fourth and Ralph Carnes was fifth. Kenneth Headen was
sixth. Tasha Kummer was seventh, with John Hawkins, Barry Boggero and Travis
Allen rounding out the top ten.
The results of the Late-Model Stock are unofficial, pending post-race
inspection.
Jamie Tate took the checkered flag in the Sportsman division main
event, as Tim Lollis finished second. Jamie Altop was third, and Les Mahaffey
took fourth just before crossing the finish line. Robin Darnell was fifth as
Kenneth Headen was sixth. Tony Bridgeman was sixth and Chris Chastain was
seventh.
It seemed to be Zach Pressley's race to lose in the Charger division,
but a mechanical problem put him on the sideline and Michael Mote went on
for the victory. James Johnson was second, Ryan Dombrosky third. Phillip
Peters and Tim Crowe rounded out the top five.
Andrew Cordell found the best place to be when trouble breaks out is
ahead of the trouble. In the first Renegade main event, Cordell was in
front when the second and third place drivers got together and spun, collecting
most of the field. Travis Cox, Edward Ragsdale, and Christy Kelley avoided
the crash and restarted in the top five places when the race restarted
with four laps remaining. Zach Meinders came back to finish fourth.
Shawn Campbell took the point from Alex Guthrie with just two laps
remaining in the second Renegade race and held on for the win. Travis Long was
third, with TJ Lollis fourth and Terry Hawthorne came up to finish fifth.
Chase Thomason held off Camden Francis to take the win in the Pure
Stock main event, with Dylan Crowe in third, and Michael Culbertson in fourth.
