UPPER SOUTH CAROLINA STATE FAIR REVIVES OLD TRADTION, LABOR DAY RACING AT THE ANNUAL UPSTATE CLASSIC
*Announcement fills void for NASCAR fans with loss of long running NASCAR DAY autograph event at the Fair
*S H CARTER 125 to offer the largest LMS weekly racing purse in the history of Greenville Pickens Speedway, $10,000 first place prize money
GREENVILLE, SC (August 5, 2010)- An old tradition returns to the upstate and the Upper South Carolina State Fair in 2010, with the announcement today of the Labor Day Monday, September 6th, S.H. CARTER 125.
"For many years, Tom & Pete Blackwell hosted a race at Greenville Pickens Speedway as part of the annual Upper South Carolina State Fair on Labor Day Monday, and it was a highly anticipated and very successful event at the Fair," said Fair Marketing Director Keith Cochran.
The Labor Day race was eventually replaced by the NASCAR DAY appearances by top NASCAR drivers such as the Earnhardts, Darrell Waltrip, Rusty Wallace and others throughout the years, an event that was held on the Fairgrounds for over 15 consecutive years and brought thousands of NASCAR fans from throughout the region to the Fair. "When NASCAR moved the Labor Day event away from Darlington to the West Coast, getting those drivers to the Upper SC State Fair for NASCAR DAY became logistically impossible," said Cochran.
So with this announcement today, a long standing tradition is revived and returning to the Upstate and the Upper South Carolina State Fair, filling the void for NASCAR fans with the departure of the NASCAR DAY autograph event and returning the Fair to its original roots in racing.
"Upstate fans have for many years talked about a big money NASCAR short track event at Greenville Pickens Speedway, now that has become a reality with this announcement," Cochran said. "Similar events are hosted by short tracks throughout the Southeast, such as South Boston, Martinsville, and Langley, to name a few. And they attract, in addition to their local track regulars, a host of visiting Late Model hot shots from throughout the region."
The winner of the S.H. Carter 125 will walk away with a top prize of $10,000. Full details including total purse, practice times, gate/time information, and full race card details are pending and will be released soon.
